Overdeveloped or enlarged male breasts, known as gynecomastia, is an embarrassing condition that affects men of all ages. Male breast reduction can be used to remove excess fat and restore contour to the male chest.
If you’re dissatisfied with the contour of your chest area, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sherif Khattab can help. Using the latest surgical techniques, Dr. Khattab can reduce and reshape your chest.
Gynecomastia can occur on one or both breasts and is rarely a life threatening condition. However, the presence of enlarged or overdeveloped breasts can adversely impact a patient’s psychological and physical well being. Male breast reduction surgery can be performed on men of all ages. You may be a potential candidate if you’re healthy and at a stable weight.
Male breast reduction surgery is a safe and effective way to reduce excess fat, glandular tissue and/or skin surrounding the breast area and restore the breasts to a normal contour. Adolescents may also be potential candidates for male breast reduction; however, secondary surgeries may be necessary in the future to maintain results if breast development has not stabilized.
The consultation: In order to determine if you are good candidate for male breast reduction, you will need to be honest and upfront about every aspect of your health. Your consultation will include a physical examination, as well as an in-depth discussion of your medical history and cosmetic goals. This information will help Dr. Khattab determine if male breast reduction is the best option available for you.
Surgery: male breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia based on Dr. Khattab’s recommendation. Surgery can be completed using liposuction, excision (surgical removal of tissue), or a combination of both. In cases where liposuction is performed alone, incisions are very small and will be located near your armpits or areola. Instances where excision is needed, incisions will be placed around the areola or at the natural crease line under your breast.
Recovery: Following surgery, most patients experience swelling, bruising and discomfort for several days. Compression garments will need to be worn for at least four weeks. Your surgeon may also provide you with oral medication to alleviate some of your discomfort. All stitches are generally removed within one to two weeks. You should be able to resume work and other daily activities within a week. More strenuous activities should be restricted for several weeks.
Results: Although most of your swelling will subside within the first few weeks, it may be three months or longer before final results are visible. Following a full recovery, you will have a firmer, flatter, more contoured chest. The results will be more or less permanent, as long as you maintain a stable, healthy weight. It is important to note that permanent scarring is inevitable. Visible scars will gradually fade and flatten over the course of 6-12 months.
