Large, pendulous breasts can cause both physical and emotional discomfort for affected women. Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty is a procedure that can be used to reshape, resize and elevate your breasts to a more appealing position.
Although breast reduction improves the shape of the breast while reducing the size, it is sometimes combined with other breast enhancement procedures such as breast lift surgery to enhance the final results.
If you’re unhappy with the size of your breasts, Dr. Sherif Khattab can help. Torrance plastic surgeon Dr. Khattab is board certified in plastic surgery and has years of experience performing breast reduction surgeries.
Breast reduction is a very popular procedure among adult women who feel their breasts are too large or heavy for their frame. The physical pain and discomfort as well as patient self-image are main reasons given for the desire for the procedure. In either case, patients happily report instant relief of neck and back pain after having this very popular procedure, as well as continuing improvement over time and increase of self-confidence.
For women who need the procedure in order to alleviate physical discomfort related to having large breasts, such as shoulder, neck or back pain, or chafing and irritation beneath the breasts, this is covered procedure with most insurance plans if requirements are met.
As a general rule, the best candidates for breast reduction are healthy, at a stable weight and do not intend to have additional children. The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for breast reduction surgery is to schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Khattab.
The consultation: In order to determine if breast reduction is right for you, you will need to be honest and upfront about every aspect of your health. Your consultation will include a physical examination, as well as an in-depth discussion of your medical history and cosmetic goals. This information will help Dr. Khattab determine if breast reduction surgery is the best option available for you.
Surgery: Breast reduction is typically an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. The most common incision pattern involves an incision made around the areola that extends vertically below the nipple and horizontally along the breast crease. Dr. Khattab will then remove and reshape underlying fat and glandular tissue. Your areola may also be repositioned and/or reduced in size. Your skin will then be re-draped and the excess will be trimmed away. Dr. Khattab will secure all incisions with sutures.
Recovery: There will be some swelling and bruising initially, which should diminish over the first few weeks. You will need to wear a support bra and compression garment to minimize swelling during the first several weeks of recovery. Any discomfort can be addressed with prescription pain medication. Your bandages will be removed in a few days, and stitches after about one week. Most normal activities can be resumed within a few weeks. Intense physical activities should be restricted for 4-6 weeks.
Results: It will take several months for your breasts to heal and adjust to their new position. There will be permanent scarring, which will continue to fade and flatten over the course of 12-18 months. Following a full recovery from breast reduction, your breasts will better complement the rest of your body. Clothing will fit more comfortably, chronic pain will subside, and it will be easier to participate in physical activities. Many women also benefit from increased self-esteem and body confidence.
