If you’re like many women, the effects of gravity, along with other factors such as weight changes, breastfeeding or menopause have caused your breasts to droop and sag. A breast lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure that can firm and raise the position of your breasts without altering overall cup size.
You may want to consider a breast lift surgery if you are experiencing one or more of the following:
Downward pointing areolas or nipples
Nipples hanging below the breast crease
Breasts with decreased firmness
Sagging, pendulous breasts
As a general rule, breast lift surgery is ideal for women who are healthy, at a stable weight and do not intend to have additional children. The best way to find out of you’re a good candidate for breast lift surgery is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Khattab.

What to Expect During Your Breast Lift Surgery
The consultation: In order to determine if breast lift surgery is right for you, you will need to be honest and upfront about every aspect of your health. This includes current or former medical conditions, current drugs or supplements and physical activities that you participate in. This information, combined with your cosmetic goals will help Dr. Khattab determine if breast lift surgery is the best option available for you.
Surgery: A breast lift is performed under general or local anesthesia combined with intravenous sedation. Incisions are made around the areola, along the breast crease and in vertical line connecting the other two incisions. Through these incisions, Dr. Khattab will remove excess skin and reposition the nipples to a higher location on the breast. During this process, the nipple and areola will remain attached to the underlying tissue, reducing the risk of sensation loss. For some patients, other incision patterns may be appropriate.
Recovery: When you wake up from surgery, it is likely that you will experience some swelling, bruising and discomfort. Medication will be available for pain management. You will also need to wear a compression garment and support bra for the first several weeks of recovery to minimize swelling. Recovery times vary. Normal activities can usually be resumed within a week and more strenuous activity in 3-6 weeks.
Results: It will take about 2 months before your breasts heal and take their final shape. A breast lift should give your breasts better contour and a more youthful appearance. Following a full recovery, your breasts will be firmer, higher and more rounded. A breast lift will not affect the size or volume of your breasts, but will return them to their natural position.
After breastfeeding my breasts are saggy and I need a lift. I don’t want implants. Can the lift help with the shape alone? The breasts aren’t the same size- can the lift make them more even?
As with all breast surgery, it has to be customized to the patient’s anatomy, local tissue and needs and expectations. There are several techniques for lifting saggy breasts after breast feeding. Without implants, skin tightening may compress the breasts into a tighter space, which will make it smaller, but firmer. That is why breast implantation is suggested to the patient so they can have more fullness while the skin is being tightened and the breast is being compressed, as well as shaping the upper pole of the breasts. Again, this should be clearly discussed with your treating surgeon and multiple examples of pictures should be shared with the patient so that she can have an idea about her options and how they will look.
Does a breast lift decrease the size of the breast, and if so, how much?
Breast lifts come in different types. The more aggressive ones tighten the skin significantly, which gives the perky and firm appearance of the breasts at the expense of compressing the breasts into a tighter skin bra, if you will. If the skin is very stretchy and a lot of skin needs to be tightened, then yes, the softer breasts will be compressed into a tighter space and will appear smaller.
What might happen with pregnancy after a breast lift?
Pregnancy can, but does not always distort the breasts. It depends on many variables, including weight gain, onset of lactation and milk engorgement, condition of the skin, and any presence of stretch marks and how large the breast is under gravitational weight. Some ladies after pregnancy do not see significant change and others can have such a change that would require that the breast lift to be revised after the patient has recovered from pregnancy and/or nursing if she desires.
What are the effects of smoking on surgical patients?
Smoking effects the local tissue healing and in breast surgery it is not a significant risk. With breast lifting procedures risks do exist. The more aggressive skin lifting procedure where significant tightening of the skin is required so that the patient can achieve a perky look, smoking can be significantly risky to the healing of the tightened skin. It is recommended that smoking would be stopped before any lifting procedure, especially the more aggressive ones. With breast augmentation, smoking although delays healing is not a significant risk and does not produce any complications.
