Is Labiaplasty for You?
Just as women come in all shapes and sizes—so too do their labia. As a woman’s most private area—women are understandably hesitant to openly discuss the condition of their nether region. However, this is quickly changing as women are embracing their femininity along with more personal procedures like labiaplasty.
What is Labiaplasty?
By removing excess skin, labiaplasty is designed to reshape the inner, and, when needed, outer labia. While women often choose labiaplasty for aesthetic reasons, there are a number of non-cosmetic reasons as well—including physical and emotional discomfort.
Echoing this sentiment, former president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Dr. Michael Edwards, explains, “More women are pursuing these procedures as a means to achieve a standard of beauty they deem appropriate for themselves, however I believe more women are also pursuing procedures like labiaplasty to correct labia-related issues that are interfering with their ability to perform sexually, to perform daily tasks such as exercise, or are merely causing discomfort.”
Common Reasons Women Choose Labiaplasty
Aesthetics
At Beyond Beautiful, we encourage each of our patients to accept that there is no true “normal” when it comes to the appearance of one’s labia. That said, many women are simply dissatisfied with their appearance. Just like their appearance elsewhere, woman want to their nether area to appear smooth, clean, and youthful. Uniquely personal to each woman, Dr. Khattab is able to trim away excess labial tissue to create a tighter, more symmetrical appearing labia.
Physical Comfort
A large or misshapen labia can be physically uncomfortable and can cause a woman to experience constant irritation, including chafing, rubbing, and pulling. With far reaching effects, a woman may experience difficulty in various parts of her life, including:
- Women find exercise uncomfortable to the point that it actually hinders their ability to participate in activities such as running, yoga, or bicycling.
- Certain positions, such as crossing ones legs, may prove uncomfortable.
- An extended labia can also be difficult to keep clean—with excess tissue present, bacteria is able to harbor within the folds of the skin.
As the excess tissue is no longer present, after labiaplasty, a woman is free to enjoy a normal, uninhibited life.
Emotional Comfort
Self-conscious of their appearance, many women struggle with low self-esteem. It is not uncommon for a woman to avoid certain activities in fear of revealing too much of herself. The emotional discomfort a woman experiences often carries into her sexual life—inhibiting intimacy and romantic relationships.
